Abstract: | This study of the Rebecca riots inquires into the rioters' grievances and their use of pre-industrial and institutional means of protest, as the latter was revealing of the numerous clashes between customs and industrialisation within the Welsh working class. The particular focus on the different protests of the early-nineteenth century establishes the hybrid dimension of the riots, whereas analysing the changes in gender and mores underway in the nineteenth century highlights the correlation between women's declining recognition within society and the decreasing importance of pre-industrial protests. |
