- Ce mémoire est une mise en perspective des écrits de Karl Heinzen (1809-1880), journaliste et pamphlétiste allemand ayant émigré aux États-Unis après l'échec des révolutions de 1848. Journaliste engagé, il a défendu sans relâche un idéal républicain radical et n'a eu de cesse de faire le procès du gouvernement américain, qu'il voyait comme une forme dévoyée des idéaux proclamés dans les textes fondateurs de la jeune nation. Polémiste notoire, Heinzen a soutenu l'abolition de l'esclavage, le mouvement féministe, et à dénoncé l'influence néfaste de la religion dans la vie publique ainsi que l'augmentation des inégalités économiques, sans pour autant rejoindre les rangs des Communistes, qu'il tenait pour de dangereux imposteurs.
