- Mayotte is a French island since 1841 and a French overseas department and region since 2011, Mayotte is a small archipelago of two islands located in the Mozambique Channel in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The island has rich tourism resources, including the natural heritage of its magnificent lagoon, as well as the tangible and intangible cultural heritage formed by various influences. Mayotte, aware of its own development delay, relied on tourism to achieve this objective, but it did not meet expectations. Our research work on the departmental plan for culture and heritage in Mayotte is an essential tool for preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the island. It aims to safeguard the tangible and intangible elements that make up the cultural wealth of Mayotte. Thanks to this plan, concrete actions can be put in place to protect historic sites, promote local traditions, support artists and encourage the transmission of ancestral knowledge. It is a real driving force for the preservation and promotion of Mayotte’s heritage.
