Le vieillissement de la population dans les pays occidentaux est inévitable, ce qui remet en cause la place des personnes âgées dans notre société. C’est un fait, nous vivons de plus en plus vieux, certains prônent la vieillesse comme une deuxième jeunesse, une période de la vie où il est bon de profiter du temps libre pour découvrir des activités, passer du temps avec ses proches ou tout simplement se reposer d’une vie antérieure bien remplie. Certains courent derrière cette jeunesse à la recherche de leur vivacité, voulant rester à la page, ils s’adaptent à ce monde en perpétuelle évolution. Mais qu’en est il des autres ? De ceux dont les événements et les avancés technologiques dépassent ? De nombreux designers, docteurs, chercheurs, artistes ou encore ergothérapeutes se sont penchés sur ce sujet. Ils ont identifiés les problématiques que peuvent rencontrer ces seniors dans leur quotidien afin d’en trouver des réponses qui permettraient d’améliorer leur qualité de vie. Une tendance est alors née : le bien vieillir. Le besoin de vieillir sereinement et ainsi d’acquérir un bien-être qui serait à portée de main, chez soi. Il existe plusieurs dispositifs mis en place dans l’habitat pour que le senior puisse être maintenu à son domicile si il en rencontre le besoin. Malheureusement ces dispositifs sont souvent peu esthétiques, l’habitat va alors se trouver transformé en “maison hôpital”. Cet environnement peut avoir un effet néfaste sur la santé mentale du sénior. Celui-ci va aborder chaque jour un foyer qui sera de l’ordre du pratique sans possibilité de se l’approprier, de trouver le beau dans l’art de vieillir.
Une bouffée d’air frais souffle sur le bien vieillir, on voit apparaître, aujourd’hui des méthodes qui apporteraient bien-être et confort dans le quotidien du senior. C’est le sensoriel. Le retour aux 5 sens et la reconnexion avec le corps. C’est un moyen de réveiller les sens peut être assoupis du senior, de stimuler l’imaginaire et la rêverie. C’est une brèche dans laquelle il est important de creuser afin d’en déterrer ses trésors. Ajouté au design, le sensoriel prend toute sa dimension et s’accorde à merveille à l’habitat et au bien-être des personnes âgées.

It is a fact that we are living older and older. The ageing of the population in Western countries is unavoidable, which calls into question the place of the senior citizens in our society. Some people advocate old age as a second youth, a period of life when it is good to take advantage of free time to discover activities, spend time with family and friends or simply rest from a busy past life. Some people run after this youth in search of their liveliness, wanting to keep up with the times, adapting to this ever-changing world. But what about the others? To whom events and technological advances are beyond comprehension? Many designers, doctors, researchers, artists and occupational therapists have studied this subject. They have identified the problems that these seniors may encounter in their daily lives in order to find answers that would improve their quality of life. A trend was then born: aging well. The need to age serenely and thus acquire a sense of well-being that would be within reach, at home. There are several measures in place in the home so that senior citizens can be kept in their own homes if they need to. Unfortunately, these devices are often not very aesthetically pleasing, and the home will then be transformed into a «hospital home». This environment can have a detrimental effect on the mental health of the senior citizen. Every day, the senior will approach a home that will be practical, without the the possibility of appropriating it, of finding beauty in the art of aging.
A breath of fresh air blows on the good aging, we see appearing today methods that would bring well-being and comfort in the daily life of the senior. It is the sensory. The return to the 5 senses and the reconnection with one’s body. It is a way to awaken the senses can be dormant in the senior, to stimulate the imagination and daydreaming. It is a breach in which it is important to dig in order to unearth its treasures. Added to the design, the sensorial takes on its full dimension and fits in perfectly with the habitat and well-being of the elderly.
