    • Eugène Carrière est un artiste célèbre qui explore des voies parallèles aux courants en vogue de son époque. Il est très vite considéré comme singulier, voire inclassable. Il peint l'intime. Il est vu comme l’un des artistes les plus importants de son époque. Eugène Carrière entretient des liens d'amitié très forts avec nombreux de ses contemporains, de cercles variés. Il est aimé, apprécié, et admiré. Beaucoup d’écrits de contemporains de l’artiste, tant sur ses oeuvres que sur l’homme, déplacent son oeuvre de la sphère esthétique vers celle de la morale. L’ouvrage : La Gloire de Van Gogh de Nathalie Heinich, démontre de quelle façon un individu réel est peu à peu constitué en personnage public. Remarqué en tant que singulier, admiré en tant que grand. De même, je me suis questionnée sur les paramètres qui font d’Eugène Carrière un « grand singulier ». Le phénomène de réception ou le privilège accordé à son oeuvre l'explique. ainsi que ses actes, sa souffrance et son oeuvre. Il est le peintre de la famille, il rend à l’art une fonction morale. Il est un humaniste doté d’une honnêteté exceptionnelle. Militant de la paix sociale, créateur des universités populaires, il défend son idée de la démocratie. La vision de son oeuvre est conditionnée par une multitude de textes critiques et stéréotypés favorables, mais parfois réducteurs. Quelle est sa place dans l'histoire de l'art ? Il fait partie de la lignée des grands, de ceux qui laissent un siècle grandi. Eugène Carrière connaît une gloire internationale. C’est un chef d'école qui enseigne un nouveau culte, il revendique sa philosophie. En rupture avec les idées artistiques de son temps, il représente aussi la modification du statut de l'artiste du XIXème siècle.
