- The purpose of this study will be to explore how Sylvia Plath forges an innovative natural imagery of her own in Ariel, out of the multiple contexts and intertexts that she inherits. The first part of this dissertation will be devoted to the roots of Plath's perception of nature. A deeper understanding of the influences that Plath recycles in her poetry about nature is helpful in gaining a broader vision of Ariel as a collection. Both literary and historical, Plath's network of influences is a rich and complex one to decipher. But there is an innovative quality to Plath's treatment of nature that goes beyond the mere reusing of previous texts. How Ariel can be regarded as a work of self-affirmation and rupture will be discussed in the second part.
