- La première recherche archéologique officielle en Iran a été menée par le chercheur Français Jacques Jean Marie de Morgan à la fin du 19ème siècle. Par la suite, de nombreux archéologues étrangers spécialistes du Paléolithique ont commencés leurs relevés ainsi que leurs fouilles tout autour de l'Iran et cela jusqu'au début de la guerre Iran - Iraq en 1980. Après la guerre, les chercheurs iraniens ont fait des études remarquables aux côtés des chercheurs étrangers et celles-ci sont encore en cours. Cette étude se concentre sur le Paléolithique moyen (PM) en Iran. Le Paléolithique moyen en Iran à l'avantage d'avoir quelques datations absolues, donc cette période est comparable avec les zones adjacentes. Cependant, la plus ancienne datation absolue PM en Iran affiche -148000 ans. Étant donné que le signe du PM est la présence de la technique Levallois (TL), certains scientifiques ont conduit des études en particulier au sein des montagnes Zagros afin de comprendre si le Zagros Moustérien est composée de LT ou de la technologie non-Levallois. Contrairement aux affirmations de certains scientifiques, les découvertes récentes en Iran et la nouvelle analyse de certains assemblages obtenus il y a plusieurs années, ont changé la perception du "non-Levallois Zagros Moustérien" et prouvent la présence de la technologie Levallois dans le Zagros. Un autre but de cette étude est de comparer les différents sites dans des endroits géologiques très différents sur l'emploi de la technique Levallois par rapport aux autres technologies Moustériennes. Deux des sites choisis sont situés dans la partie nord du désert Iranien central (DIC), Mirak et Chah-e Jam, et deux autres sont situés dans les montagnes du Zagros : Kunji et Mar-Tarik. Les études techno-typologiques ont révélées la relation entre l'emploi de la technologie Levallois et l'approvisionnement en matières premières. Les sites avec accès aux matières premières locales, représentent l'indice le plus élevées de la technique Levallois

The first official Archaeological research in Iran was conducted by the French researcher Jacques Jean Marie de Morgan in the late 19th century. Thereafter a lot of non-Iranian concerned and curious Paleolithic Archaeologists commenced their surveys and excavation all around Iran which lasted till the beginning of the Iran-Iraq war in 1980. After the war, Iranian scholars conducted notable researches alongside the non-Iranians which are still ongoing. The concentration of this study is on Mid-Paleolithic (MP) of Iran. MP in Iran has the advantage of the few absolute datings, therefore this period is comparable with the adjacent areas. However the oldest absolute dating of the MP site in Iran represents 148000 kya. Since the hallmark of the MP is the presence of Levallois technique (LT), some scientists have conducted studies especially in the Zagros Mountains questioning if the Zagros Mousterian consisted of LT or Non-Levallois technology. Contrary to the claims of some scientists, the recent discoveries in Iran and the new reanalysis of some obtained assemblages from many years ago, have changed the perception of the "Non-Levallois Zagros Mousterian" and proves the presence of LT in the Zagros. Another aim of this study is to compare different sites in very different geological locations in terms of employing Levallois versus other Mousterian technologies. Two of the chosen sites are located in the northern edge of the Iranian Central Desert (ICD), Mirak and Chah-e Jam, and two others are located in the Zagros Mountains, Kunji and Mar-Tarik. The techno-typological studies revealed the relation between employing the LT and the raw material procurement. The sites with the access to the local raw materials, represent the higher index of Levallois.
