This Mémoire of Master 1 presents the results of a study on the micro morphologic and micro
morphometric features of cut marks. Because of the restrictions caused by the health
emergency due to the SARS-CoV-2 the study was divided in two parts: one focused on the
study of a collection coming from an experimental butchery and the other focused on a
bibliographic research. This work has the purpose to explore the different features that cut
marks can present depending on the variation of actors, effectors and actions that generate
them. Particular attention is put on the cut marks caused by the butchery activities induced by
the using of shell tools. Indeed, due the scarcity of cut marks within the archeofaunal
assemblages along the Middle Paleolithic North Africa sites, it has been hypothesized that, in
order to conduct butchery activities, shell tools were used instead of stone tools. To explore
this hypothesis an experimental butchery was performed by E. Campmas, F. Romagnoli and
S. Costamagno on the carcass of an adult sheep.
The present study continues this previous work, by performing a preliminary study of the cut
marks generated on the experimental collection and by carrying out a bibliographic research.
The present research takes part in the program of double degree agreed between the
University of Ferrara and the University of Toulouse Jean Jaurès.
