- In late 2015 and early 2016, the relationship between the United States and Iran returned to the front scene after an unprecedented deal over Iran’s nuclear program was reached between the two countries. Even though it did not aim at resolving all differences with Iran, it was the first time in decades such a “unique” opportunity was created. It had been long-awaited, and the negotiations were quite rough. In fact, it was not just a “nuclear deal”; instead, it finally gave concrete hopes and prospects for change, especially for the potential crisis recovery in the Middle East. It is certainly true that the United States and Iran are not dependent on each other in any forms, since they have been isolated from one another for nearly three decades without being held back by it. Nevertheless, the possibility of a smoothen relationship between the two countries can be deemed strongly needed or even necessary in regards to the Middle East peace process. As Madeleine Albright put it: “Iran’s strategic location, cultural influence and size made it a pivotal state in one of the world’s most combustible regions.” The present work will thus analyze the intricate nature of the relationship between the United States and Iran as a means to explore the issues involved and their implications in a more global perspective.
