    • Cette thèse examine la construction de la protagoniste féminine néo-victorienne dans trois romans : The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1969) de John Fowles, The Crimson Petal and the White (2002) de Michel Faber et Fingersmith (2002) de Sarah Waters. Plus précisément, la thèse se concentre sur l’évolution des techniques narratives ainsi que des représentations et des portraits du personnage féminin entre le XIXe et le XXIe siècle permettant aux auteurs postmodernes de fiction néo-victorienne de réécrire, réviser et remettre en question plusieurs romans victoriens tels que ceux de Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens et Mrs Henry Wood. Le projet s’appuie sur trois axes de recherche. En raison des multiples similitudes avec le genre de la sensation victorienne, l’intérêt est d’abord centré sur la représentation du personnage de fiction à la croisée de la fiction à sensation et des études de genre dans une perspective narratologique. L’objectif est d’établir différents parallèles entre la protagoniste néo-victorienne d’une part, l’héroïne victorienne à sensation et la figure de la Nouvelle Femme d’autre part afin de montrer que le roman néo-victorien et le personnage féminin néo-victorien ne doivent pas être considérés comme de simples répliques contemporaines des personnages du XIXe siècle, mais plutôt comme des tentatives de reconsidérer l’impact durable de la littérature victorienne et des distinctions socio-historiques et politiques sur les représentations des XXe et XXIe siècles. Considérant que la fiction néo-victorienne s’engage dans la réécriture du récit historique de la période victorienne en représentant des voix marginalisées et de nouvelles histoires de la sexualité (Llewellyn 2008), la deuxième partie de cette étude se penche sur les réorientations politiques du personnage néo-victorien et sur l’importance de la voix et de la création littéraire féminines ainsi que de l’héritage féministe. Les romans étudiés célèbrent les voix marginales et leurs permettent une diversité et pluralité. Cette multiplicité a pour but non seulement de permettre aux personnages de mettre en évidence leur capacité de création littéraire, mais aussi de construire des identités alternatives qui rompent avec les stéréotypes patriarcaux. Le concept de sexsation de Marie-Luise Kohlke révèle l’intérêt de la fiction néo-victorienne pour la construction des identités (sexuelles) des femmes. Dans la troisième partie, l’accent est mis sur la représentation matérielle du personnage et du corps féminins. Conciliant engagement politique sexuel et créativité littéraire, les protagonistes féminines de ces romans rappellent la figure de la Nouvelle Femme. En outre, à travers une approche phénoménologique et somesthésique, cette étude examine également l’effet de la matérialité féminine sur le lecteur contemporain. Les différents processus de caractérisation féminine dans le texte néo-victorien rendent le personnage féminin plus matériel, plus viscéral, plus tangible et entraînent ainsi une relation corporelle avec le lecteur. La protagoniste féminine néo-victorienne cesse d’être un élément narratif dans une histoire pour devenir un actant. Elle n’est pas simplement un personnage mais un élément structurel intégral sur lequel tourne le récit, à la fois victorien et contemporain, imaginaire et réel, fictif et matériel.
    • This doctoral thesis examines the construction of the neo-Victorian female protagonist in three novels: The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1969) by John Fowles, The Crimson Petal and the White (2002) by Michel Faber and Fingersmith (2002) by Sarah Waters. More specifically, it focuses on the evolution of narrative techniques as well as the representations and portrayals of the female character between the 19th and 21st centuries allowing postmodern authors of neo-Victorian fiction to rewrite, revise and question several key Victorian novels such as those by Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens and Mrs Henry Wood. The project relies on three research axes. The interest is first centred on the representation of the fictional character at the crossroads of sensation fiction and gender studies from a narratological perspective because of multiple similarities with the genre of Victorian sensation. The objective is to draw various parallels between the neo-Victorian protagonist on the one hand, the sensational Victorian heroine and the figure of the New Woman on the other hand in order to show that the neo-Victorian novel and the neo-Victorian female character should not be seen as mere contemporary replicas of nineteenth-century characters, but rather as attempts to reconsider the enduring impact of Victorian literature and socio-historical and political distinctions on 20th- and 21st-centuries representations. Because of neo-Victorian fiction’s desire to re-write the historical narrative of the Victorian period by representing marginalised voices and new histories of sexuality, the second part of the study looks at the political re-orientations of the neo-Victorian character and the importance of female voice and authorship as well as feminist heritage. The novels under study celebrate marginal voices and allow them diversity and plurality. This multifariousness is meant not only for the characters to construct alternative identities which break with patriarchal stereotypes, but also to highlight their creative literary capacity. Marie-Luise Kohlke’s concept of sexsation reveals neo-Victorian fiction’s interest in the construction of women’s (sexual) identities. The focus in the third part is on the material representation of the female character and body. Reconciling sexual political commitment and literary creativity, the female protagonists of these novels recall the figure of the New Woman. Furthermore, through a phenomenological and somaesthetic approach, this study also examines the subsequent effect of female materiality on the contemporary reader. The different processes of female characterisation in the neo-Victorian text render the female character more material, more visceral, more tangible, and thus result in a bodily relation with the reader. The neo-Victorian female protagonist ceases to be a narrative element in a story in order to become an actant. She is not simply a character but an integral structural element upon which the narrative revolves, both Victorian and contemporary, imaginary and real, fictive and material.
