    • Cette thèse porte sur la représentation du martyre de saint Jean-Baptiste dans l’art de l’Occident latin aux siècles centraux du Moyen Âge. A été considéré, pour l’étude de synthèse comme pour le catalogue monographique qui l’appuie, l’ensemble des images, de toute nature, produites sur ce thème biblique entre le milieu du IXe siècle et le premier tiers du XIIIe. Soit entre la première translation occidentale du chef du Précurseur, à Saint-Jean-d’Angély, et l’arrivée d’une autre relique importante, à Amiens. Toutes les séquences du récit évangélique ont été retenues, mais le propos a naturellement été centré sur la danse de la princesse Salomé au banquet du roi Hérode et sur la décollation du prophète en prison, deux scènes nodales qui n’ont surtout été étudiées jusqu’ici qu’à travers les versions ultérieures du thème. La présentation détaillée du corpus (textuel et iconographique), sa remise en contexte historique et spatial (étayée par des études de cas) ainsi que son analyse circonstanciée (personnage par personnage de l’histoire) suivent principalement deux fils rouges : l’hagiologie, ou la mise en image du martyre du saint et la promotion du culte des reliques et de l’hostie qui en est issu ; et l’ecclésiologie, ou la pensée de l’Église médiévale sur son institution et sur son rôle dans la société. La représentation du drame martyrial du cousin du Christ, effectivement, est entendue ici comme la traduction mythique d’un antagonisme, fondamental autant que fabriqué, entre le charnel et le spirituel, les sphères profane et sacrée, l’aristocratie féodale et le personnel clérical. Ou comment soutenir, par l’image, une domination sur les classes et les corps.
    • This dissertation focuses on the representation of the martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist in the art of the Latin West in the central centuries of the Middle Ages. Both the study and the supporting monographic catalogue take into account all the images, of all kinds, produced on this biblical theme between the middle of the ninth century and the first third of the thirteenth. That is, between the first Western translation of the head of the Precursor, to Saint-Jean-d'Angély, and the arrival of another important relic, in Amiens. All the sequences of the Gospel story have been included, but the subject has naturally been centered on the dance of Princess Salome at the banquet of King Herod and on the beheading of the prophet in prison, two key scenes that have so far only been studied through later versions of the theme. The detailed presentation of the corpus (textual and iconographic), its historical and spatial contextualization (supported by case studies) as well as its comprehensive analysis (character by character in the story) follow two main themes: hagiology, or the depiction of the saint's martyrdom and the promotion of the resulting cult of relics and the host; and ecclesiology, or the thinking of the medieval Church on its institution and its role in society. The representation of the martyrial drama of Christ's cousin, in fact, is understood here as the mythical translation of an antagonism, fundamental as much as fabricated, between the carnal and the spiritual, the profane and sacred spheres, the feudal aristocracy and the clerical personnel. Or how to sustain, through images, a domination over classes and bodies.
