This dissertation examines the Alexandrian coinage of Year 13 of Trajan’s reign (AD 109/110), with particular attention to the animal representations depicted on the reverses. Based on a numismatic corpus primarily compiled from the Roman Provincial Coinage (RPC), this study seeks to understand the role and meaning of these representations within the political, religious, and cultural context of Roman Egypt.
After providing an overview of Trajan’s reign and the specific characteristics of Alexandrian provincial coinage, the study examines the various iconographic types represented in the corpus, comparing them with Egyptian religious traditions as well as Greek and Roman influences. The analysis highlights the diversity of the animals depicted and their associations with deities, cults, and concepts related to power, protection, fertility, and divine order.
The study demonstrates that the presence of these animals cannot be reduced to a merely decorative function. Their use forms part of a complex iconographic language based on the continuity and reinterpretation of ancient traditions within the political framework of the Roman Empire. The particular richness of the issues of Year 13 therefore illustrates the ability of Alexandrian coinage to associate Trajan’s imperial authority with the religious and cultural traditions of Egypt. Ultimately, this corpus provides an opportunity to examine more broadly the ways in which Roman power adapted to provincial traditions and the role of coinage as a medium of political, religious, and cultural communication. - Accès au document
