- The dissertation provides the narratological and stylistic analysis of Alice Munro's three metafictional short stories - "The Office," "Material," and "Fiction"- characterised by the strong presence of three women narrators and writers. The study focuses first on the feminist literary criticism that the stories received, analysing in detail the gendered and narrative conflict between woman as a writer and masculine phallocentric storytellers. The analysis concentrates further on metafictional techniques and devices deployed to challenge the issue of phallocentrism in literature, using narratology and stylistics to support the arguments. The primary goal of the study is to present a vast range of both metafictional and stylistic techniques used by Alice Munro in the three stories to demonstrate how, through the interrogative short story form, her narratives challenge the idea of the universality of a unique female experience as the only means to challenge phallocentrism.
