My thesis of the end of my studies is about child’s imagination through illustrated books. I’m passionate since I’m a child about drawing and illustration, and illustrated books for children have always accompagned me.What I like, it’s stories of adventure, monster and fantasy, like Maurice Sendak’s and Claude Ponti’s books.
In this dissertation, I ask a question: what kind of tools and tricks available for an illustrator mentions the concept of imagination in the illustrations?
The Imagination thematic is very important in the childhood literature, because it allows to throw oneself in distant universes, in particular from the bedroom. I link my dissertation and my end of studies’s project together: I create an illustrated book for children which is about imagination and nightmare, about the child in front of the night. This will be intituled «Sally, nightmare’s terror», and I intend to make it publish as soon as I can.
In this book, the pictures are made on scratch cards, and I like the details, the texture and the «engraving» effect we can get in that drawing approach. The graphic tread is at the heart of my thesis, because I want to take advantage of this to make researches and a thorough analysis on the tread and the line in the childhood illustration. I speak about Imagination through several steps: first, I speak about that generally, how the child structure his imagination with the daily items, like the room, for exemple.Imagination is a play area. Then, I speak about the rôle of bedroom (the private and personal place for the child), like a true medium for fantasy and invitation to travel. The bed, also, is a kind of «springboard» for the child to being thrown in dream and imaginary, through the sleep.
Then, I speak, about the part of the night in the child’s imagination, how darkness make the monsters, shadows and other creatures emerge. Here, it’s a question of speaking about the child in front of his fears and anxieties. After that, I speak about the engraving of XIX century, and about the representation of fantastic and monstrous (like the works of Francisco de Goya, Odilon Redon, Gustave Doré), to make analysis to understand the engraving, the line, the tread and the texture of the ink queezed on the white paper.
Finally, I want to bring to a close my thesis with my student project and my way of drawing, my ambitions for that project. I speak about how I put myself in the place of Publishing for childhood, as a illustrator, a g
