The trompe-l’œil techniques are a remarquable display of the strengh of colours and materials through which the viewer can be subtly compelled, amused and even absorbed. These delicate combinations make the pictured sceneries feel almost tangible. We may be in the presence of mere images, but these have the power to entrance and allure not only our eyes but also our minds, to break the boundaries of creativity and innovation.
In order to understand how this imaginary world works so well, we need to dissect the trompe-l’oeil and illusion techniques. Indeed, they come alive by the clever association of colours, materials and patterns. On top of being a testimony of virtuosity, the art of trompe-l’oeil is deeply moving, calling on both our senses and our emotions. It transports us into a different reality : here lies the strengh of colouring. The piece of work seems familiar and yet it fuels our imagination. Trompe-l’œil has the same captivating power as mimestism in nature, close to fascination.
Then, why is it so fascinating ? Indeed, because trompe-l’œil takes its inspiration primarily from nature, it provides an answer to our instinctive urge for imitation. And yet, paradoxically, it seems that by trying to achieve a perfect imitation of an object of reality the artist/craftsman will inevitably be summoned to invent new techniques. This is how the art of trompe l’oeil has also become part and parcel of global design. As such, it has been a constant source of innovation but also a potential participant in the race for profit, passing from being a symbol of the suspension of art in time and space to becoming a token of our fast and cheap industrial world.
Today, we have to challenge this new model of industrial trompe-l’œil, by highlighting the importance of the time spent on creation and the uniqueness of the imaginary space and mysterious dimension it can open for each individual. Trompe-l’œil could very well emerge as a crucial element in the realm of contemporary creation. It is a legitimate representative of the importance of work and craftsmanship. The originality of trompe l’œil also stresses the necessity for design to rely on innovation not only as a means to achieve its mimetic ideal but also to renew the emotional ties between men and objects, in line with the actual environmental stakes.
